Why are you on the Food Network?

A particular person caught my interest the other day thanks to a family member. Now, if you're like my sister and regularly watch the Food Network you may have also heard of Sandra Lee. Now, what makes Lee so special? Well, she's on a COOKING (big emphasis on that word) channel, and this is the kind of stuff her show makes:

What. Is. This. Nonsense. Not a single bit of baking done, all store bought goods and then rearranged in the tackiest fashion possible.

Oh wait, she even has books.

Then again, I'm not too surprised. I mean, this is what she used to sell prior to her "no cooking" cooking show.

B.C. Bus Drivers Boycott Atheist Ad Campaign

A handful of BC Transit employees are refusing to drive buses that sport ads questioning the existence of God.
The ads came courtesy of the Centre for Inquiry Canada, a skeptic organization that has sponsored similar advertisements across the country since 2009. They read, "There's probably no god. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life." The campaign debuted in B.C. last week on buses in Kamloops and Kelowna – prompting a boycott from a small number of drivers in both communities on religious grounds.

What do you readers think about this?

Hipmunk Travel Ads

Today's set of ads are for a travel agency that is marketing their website as one that doesn't have annoying ads on it. I thought of these as a very clever way to bring attention to how annoying some ads can be when you're searching for something very important, such as travel details for your next trip!

Confusing Ads.

Not all ads are good. Some are just plain confusing like the Lovell Beer Ads. In fact, most ads aren't even memorable. And then, you get some that are memorable, but for the wrong reason. Such as, they don't make any sense at all.

Here, take this Samsung ad for example:

For those who can't read the text, it says "Even a Weather Forecast looks like a work of art". What is that what kind of weather forecaster dresses like that? Why does it look like she's twirling strings of light? I wouldn't even know this was for a TV unless I saw the picture on the bottom right hand corner.

Sony has been known to do some rather strange ads. But this one for the PSP still doesn't make sense to me:

If someone wants to interpret this for me, by all means, do so.

And then from PETA, I just ended up staring for a good minute before realizing this wasn't an ad for pornography.

Who still rides horse carriages in this day and age anyways?

3DS Ads.

The 3DS is the next series of Nintendo handhelds and they're now available for purchase.

But despite this the ads for this product are somewhat less widespread. Instead, Nintendo wants to rely more on "word-of-mouth" and cinematic ads apparently. Such as this Youtube ad:

There are a few magazines ads and I've heard of infobooths popping up to demonstrate the 3DS. That being said, what do you guys think will be more effective?

Vintage Coffee Ads from the 1900's

Anyone whose ever drank coffee probably knows why the number 1 sales pitched used by Coffee Manufactures is based upon the caffeine content of it, and the flavor. Something which such high caffeine content, most modern energy drinks struggle to compete with it, and a flavor so unique it's shared by millions in the United States alone every morning, no wonder it sells so well! Tonights ads show that Coffee has been around for hundreds of years, and isn't going anywhere anytime soon!

Enjoy these Vintage 1900's Coffee Ads!

April Fools!

On this day, trust nothing and no one because chances are it's nothing but a silly joke. Ads are no exception so today I'm going to show you a collection of ads that were presented on April Fools. BUT, one of them wasn't, can you figure out which one?

Let's start with this Guinness ad. The beer looks, hm.

This one is a bit more obvious, I think Waltross wasn't trying hard enough.

Not for dog lovers I guess.

This Swedish ad depicts a burger going from ~$1 to ~$10.

So, did you figure it out which one was the fake April Fools day ad? It was the panana one, well done to everyone who guessed it right!

Nah, I'm kidding. None of them were. :)

Lovells Beer Ads

I recently ran across a few "interesting" for ads for Lovells, an Australian beer. The first one isn't too special:

Simple message, drink responsibly. Not sure why the guy has his name and address on his shirt though. Maybe to show that they'll catch you if you don't drink responsibly? Not too sure on this one.

However, this next ad seems a bit counter-intuitive:

Really? You just tell us to drink responsibly and what has this kangaroo done to itself? Or is it ok because he's just an animal? Or am I looking too deeply into this? Either way, the kangaroo seems to have enjoyed itself.

"Life's too short for the wrong job!" Ad Campaign

Not much to say about the following ads, they speak for themselves! I love ads that get right to the point of things, I think these are a reminder to all of us; telling us to make sure we're spending each day wisely!

Japanese Burger King Ads.

While we're on the topic of Japan, they have some of the greatest ads conceivable as I showed in this post. And that was with celebrities. Thus we can conclude that their fastfood ads and ideas are just as awesome.

For example:

Addy mentioned that this originally was for Middle Eastern countries but I guess Japan decided that they wanted a pizza burger too. One can only hope that one day this "delicacy" gets a North American version.

And who remembers Windows 7 being released? Pretty much all of you. Now who remembers buying a 7 patty Whopper to celebrate this event? Probably no one, unless you're from Japan.

Delicious.

And remember, if you haven't already, donate something to the disaster that happened recently.

Clever Red Cross Ads.

Everyone knows about the Red Cross and their humanitarian efforts and I'm pretty sure you've seen their ads all over the place. Such as this one:

Creative, humorous, sticks in your head, makes me want to donate blood, perfect.

I'm also quite certain that everyone is aware of the disaster that struck Japan recently. This ad by Red Cross is unique in that you can use your Smartphone to donate money directly to the cause.

And if you haven't donated yet, you should. Even if you're a poor, starving University student (like me) every little bit helps.

Suggestive Arby's Ads.

Earlier blog posts have shown fastfood companies such as Burger King have rather "suggestive" ads in attempt to attract the attention of customers.

Turns out an executive at Arby's had a similar idea too.

Oh and it gets better. Really? Would you do this? I wouldn't. Well, mostly because I don't have a grease fetish. This is probably photoshopped but at the same time, I wouldn't doubt it if it were real.

What were they thinking?

Corona Extra Beer Ad

Corona Extra, labeled as Coronita in Spain (literally, little crown), more commonly known as just Corona in the US, is the top selling important beer in the US, which is owned and produced by Cerveceria Modelo. It didn't get that way purely by being an excellent drink, with great products come great marketing teams! Corona beer is available in a variety of bottled presentations, anywhere from 6.4 fl oz. to 31.8 fl oz. Which such a large product line they normally choose an average size bottle to advertise in posters and commercials. As you can see in the ad below, they're luring in the customer by using the appeal of alcohol as well as the appeal of a nude beach.

Enjoy the Ad!

Apologies for Delays!

Due to expected (and unexpected) events in the real world posting has been delayed. Myself, this week is extremely hectic as the end of the term nears (a.k.a., 2 midterms, a poster presentation, interviews) while Addy recently finished moving and I believe is still settling in.

We'd like to thank all the followers that are still sticking with us through this little hiccup, we'll have a more scheduled posting session when our lives resumes a semblance of normality. That being said, there will be a legit new post by Wednesday.

In the meantime, satiate your love of bad ads with this example. What were these people thinking? There are better ways to make an ad.

Funny Health Insurance Ads

As a Canadian, I generally don't need to worry about the cost of healthcare. In fact, my biggest worry is wait times. But apparently down south, it's still a big issue. To be honest, I'm not sure what exactly happened with Obama and his supposed Healthcare reforms or if they ever went through. I guess this means Americans still should have health insurance.

Well at least this company has a sense of humor about why you should have it. I would certainly want insurance if I was ever in this situation:

Or this one:

Or if my kid was this stupid:

But I think I'll just stay in Canada and enjoy my free healthcare.

EDIT: Images claim I'm taking them from a site called Toxel but this only appears via Internet Explorer for me (as opposed to Firefox). This has been fixed, sorry about that!

Condom Ads - Marketing themselves

Some specific products require very little marketing compared to others, these are products that we like to say sell themselves. Some specific examples of this are beer, food, and nearly anything involving sex. Experts predict basic human instincts may come into play when determining what people pay attention to in these ads. One specific product we'll showcase today is condoms. Whether you're trying to prevent from having a baby or staying safe from sexually transmitted infections, condoms always have a quick and simple message to send to the customer. Here are some basic facts always pushed in the most popular condom ads of 2009:
  • At least 75 million Americans have a sexually transmitted infection-that's 1 in 4 adults.
  • Always use a condom, going without one puts you and your partner at risk.
  • You can get a number of infections from unprotected oral sex.
  • 1 in 5 newly infected individuals with HIV in the US has a drug resistant strain of the virus.

Here's a series of ads demonstrating just how simple most condom ads are:

Fanmade Minecraft Ads.

Most products generally require advertisements of some sort to garner any sort of attention and purchase from consumers. So when you get something like Minecraft which has sold over a million units via word of mouth that's quite an impressive feat.

That hasn't stopped fans from making their own videos attempting to describe the game and experience however.

This trailer does a fairly good job, I don't care for the Inception music however:

This ad looks a bit more professional even if it makes no sense:

And I'll be honest, Minecraft is one of those games you have to experience yourself to understand why it's so popular. Maybe that's why there are no official ads currently. If all you've played is the free version then I can see why you'd be bored or uninterested. I'd recommend shelling out the $15-$20 for the full version and see what you think. If you're anything like me, you'll be up till 5AM each morning for a week.

Additonal Blog Author

Hello everyone! My name is Devon and I'll be joining Addy as a co-author in addition to the changes made to his blog. There really isn't much more that I can say for an intro so I'd just like to point out a site one of my profs showed us.

We all know that Japan has pretty messed up commercials. What you probably don't know is that often they hire North American actors to star in them. Want to see Nick Cage screaming about some random crap, we've got that:

What about Arnold Schwarzenegger giving really creepy smiles for a drink? We also got that:

We've also got Brad Pitt telling people to stare at his ass if you're into that kind of thing:

If you're still interested there are literally dozens upon dozens of additional footage (I recommend watching all of Arnie's) at Japander.com. I hope you have lots of spare time though, this site has a way of eating up all of it.

Funny Skol Beer Ad

Beer ads are always awesome, here's what looks to be a Spanish brand, Skol.
